The year 2009 marks the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his most celebrated publication, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection. In the run-up to this date and as part of the UK-wide celebration of Darwin’s life and work, the Darwin and Scotland project involves the Scottish institutions that Darwin encountered in Edinburgh.

Following a successful research workshop in October 2007, an international symposium will be held on 13 and 14 March 2008. It will explore the lasting influence of Darwin on Scottish intellectual thought and will further the understanding of the Scottish dimension of Darwinism.
